-Pilates Essential: What
you need to know before
you start.
In England,
Joseph Pilates, a sickly youth who wanted better health and
a stronger physique, developed a movement system that stretched,
strengthened and balanced the body. When he moved to New York
City in the late 1920s, his system, known simply as Pilates (Pi-lah-tees),
caught on, primarily with dancers.
Pilates works to retrain core muscles to establish better
posture, relieve stress, reduce joint discomfort and stiffness,
and improve mobility and balance.
As a Pilates
instructor,
I have found that
participants in my
classes often mention
how Pilates has changed
their lives. A client with
Multiple Sclerosis
has discovered that she
has regained some
control and muscle tone.
An octogenarian tells me
that she gets out of bed
now every morning with
no pain and is conscious
of alignment when out
for her daily one hour
walk. Women who were
beginning to lose height
have regained stature
and upright posture..
After several months of
Pilates, you, too, may
find that your muscles are
toned and shaped like you've
never experienced before.
All you'll need is an
exercise mat, a resistance
band, light weights, and
most importantly, a skilled,
Pilates-trained instructor.
Once you've had about 20
hours of in-studio practice,
you'll be able to do Pilates
at home. But first, it's
best to acquaint yourself
with the eight principles of
-Pilates exercise. They are:
|
|
|
Relaxation:
The starting
point of any lesson is to
relax the large exterior
muscles, often by lying
on your mat, knees up, legs
hip width apart, shoulder blades
down, head supported with a
small cushion performing
lateral breathing. This is
done by engaging the pelvic
floor muscles, pulling the
navel toward the spine,
breathing into the low back
ribs by inhaling through the
nose and exhaling through
the mouth. By keeping the
spine relaxed the front ribs
remain "closed," sliding
away and together rather
than flaring up and out.
Side ribs will move slightly
like bucket handles coming
up and down. Lateral
breathing is used in every
position.
Concentration:
Pilates
requires that you be
constantly aware of how you
are moving and where you are
in space. Every movement
develops sensory feedback.
This "brainwork" enhances
the function of your body's
neural pathways and
communication channels.
Alignment:
You'll learn to
put your body into good
postural alignment no matter
what position you are in
lying on the mat, on your
back or side, standing, or
on all fours. This is
essential to proper muscle
balance. Ignoring proper
alignment stresses the
joints.
Breathing:
Lateral
breathing, as explained
above, works the muscles
between the ribs, making the
upper body more fluid and
mobile.

Centring:
By keeping the
navel back toward the spine,
the low back is protected
and the body is stable.
Knowing how to stabilize the
shoulder area enhances your
ability to remain centred
with a relaxed upper body,
allowing you to constantly
lengthen from the crown of
your head to tail.
Co-ordination:
The brain and
the muscles remember
sequences of movement. Over
time, simple movement
patterns become more
challenging and light
weights or resistance can be
added. There's lots of "pat
your head, rub your tummy"
in Pilates.
-Flowing Movement:
Pilates is
about natural movement
performed correctly, in
natural anatomical
alignment, gracefully and
slowly, with control.

Stamina:
Pilates programs
aim to build endurance into
the core muscles. You'll
become more skilled at
recruiting muscles in the
correct order and executing
the exercises with ease.

The beauty of Pilates is
that once you become
proficient in several
movements, you can
practice
at home. The natural
complement to Pilates is
some aerobic work: brisk
walking, cycling, swimming
(especially backstroke).
Bear in mind that while
engaged in other activities
or you run the risk of
undoing all the good you
achieved on the mat.

-Some of Pilates
Essentials are:
A
reasonable Pilates
studio to do the
workouts. The
teacher should have
some Pilates
certification and a
proof for Pilates
teacher training. As
a matter of fact
there is quite some
difference between
Pilates theory and a
good Pilates
training, there is
no work around, this
is one of the most
basic Pilates
essentials.
A excellent pilates
exercise cant be
performed without at
least some basic
Pilates equipment
for a reasonable
Pilates workout.
Pilates exercises
are not very far
from a good
yoga class
teaching, of
course it's
different but not so
much in terms of the
result people want
to achieve.
Pilates classes,
maybe stott Pilates
or winsor Pilates
via a Pilates
reformer are for
sure a good
exercise. More on
that Pilates class
goes via Pilates
yoga and a
Pilates teaching
course.
Pilates essential
is more or less
integrating your
body with your mind
and doing it the
right way, “wishi
washi”. Pilates
focuses on the basic
postural muscles
which keep the body
balanced and are a
Pilates essential to
give support for the
|
|
|
spine.
Pilates essential
is also, do the
exercise orderly or
not do it at all.
Mr. Pilates
indicated that it is
better not to
exercise at all if
it is not sure that
one is able to do it
in the right way
since damage to the
body can be done
using not the
correct technique.
Pilates essential
are a integration of
different techniques
into various
exercises including
yoga. Even some
Chinese acrobatics
are involved to
bring Pilates
essentials together.
The central idea
of all Pilates
exercise is the
"mind over matter".
This involves to
find a connection
between body and
mind. It is a
Pilates essential to
focus every workout
on this subject. |
